Director of Finance

Mid-Peninsula High School in Menlo Park, CA seeks a full-time Director of Finance, who will be responsible for being the closest partner to the Head of School and the Board of Trustees in maintaining the school’s excellent financial position, and in developing financial models that will help the school continue to grow in ways that will be sustainable for the long term. We are open to considering a schedule that would include some work-from-home time for the right candidate. The new Director ideally would begin on November 15; we are open to being flexible on the start date for the right candidate. The Director of Finance is a member of the school’s Administrative Team, as is the Director of Operations who reports to the Director of Finance.  We are seeking a person who has developed broad and deep skills in accounting, budget development and management, forecasting, and audits. This person should have experience with human resources—either as the direct manager of an organization’s HR systems and procedures, or as a partnership with an in-house or outsourced HR professional. Excellent candidates will be able to show a strong track record of sound financial management, excellent communication skills with multiple constituencies, and an ability to partner effectively with both supervisors and subordinates. We are seeking a strategic thinker who can be a strong thought partner to the Board, the Head, and other colleagues as Mid-Pen enters its next phase of enrollment and facilities growth, as well as a community-minded person who is excited to contribute to our kind and accepting culture.

We will consider a candidate’s skills and experience when determining the salary for this position. Candidates can expect to be paid within the salary range of $90,000 to $125,000, which is competitive amongst small independent schools in our region.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In partnership with the Head of School, the Administrative Team, and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, develop and manage the school’s $4.5 million budget.
  • Contribute actively to Administrative Team and Finance Committee meetings.  Prepare reports for monthly Finance committee meetings, in partnership with the chair of the committee, and attend monthly Board of Trustee meetings as needed and appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain systems for accounts receivable and payable using Quickbooks, including tuition, and maintain clear communication with colleagues and vendors regarding purchasing, reconciliation, etc.
  • Manage the school’s partnership with our payroll firm and maintain systems for verifying payroll on a regular basis.
  • Partner with the Director of Development to track and reconcile monetary and other gifts to the school.
  • Partner with our audit firm and the Finance Committee to conduct the full annual audit of the school’s financial records, and lead our tax preparation and filing with our tax firm.  Ensure that these initiatives are reported to the Finance Committee and the full Board in a timely manner.
  • Lead and participate in strategic conversations about future initiatives at the school, such as construction and expansion of enrollment.

Skills, Mindset, and Background:

  • A willingness to embrace the Mid-Pen Mission Statement and core values and a strong desire to be a positive, active, and joyful presence in the daily life of the school is required.
