A Vibrant Celebration of Heritage and Community

The sound of rhythmic footwork echoed across the Mid-Pen patio as two swirling bursts of color took center stage. Donning traditional dresses with flowing skirts, bold red lipstick, and strands of beaded necklaces, Ary H. ’26 and Larissa P. ’27 danced with precision and joy, each click of their heels part of the music itself. As the fabric rippled and twirled the entire student body watched in awe — a beautiful finale to Hispanic Heritage Month here at Mid-Pen.

Earlier today, members of the LatinX Affinity Group, many dressed in traditional clothing from their respective cultures, led a school-wide presentation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which ends tomorrow on October 15. Each student shared stories and insights about the countries they call part of their heritage, including Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Peru, and Spain. They highlighted traditional foods, cultural traditions, and fascinating facts — like how the smallest living bird in the world, the bee hummingbird, is native to Cuba, and that Mexico has 68 indigenous languages!

These moments of sharing are about more than history. They remind us how powerful it is to learn from one another’s backgrounds and celebrate the many cultures that shape our community.

The celebration continued outside, where tables were filled with an array of delicious foods brought in by the LatinX students and their families. Empanadas, tamales, ceviche, nachos, and other dishes lined the tables, followed by sweet treats like flan and conchas, giving all of our students and staffulty a literal taste of the cultures they’d just learned more about.

The afternoon concluded with Ary and Larissa’s dazzling performance, a joyful tribute to tradition and identity that brought the entire school together. Their dance was more than just a performance, it was a living expression of culture, community, and pride, and the perfect way to close out Hispanic Heritage Month at Mid-Pen.

Celebrations like this remind us why it’s so important to honor and share the many cultures that make up our community. By learning about one another’s histories, traditions, and stories, we build deeper connections, cultivate empathy, and create a school where every student’s identity is valued and celebrated. At Mid-Pen, we believe that embracing our diversity doesn’t just enrich our understanding of the world, it strengthens the bonds that hold us together.
