From The Redwoods to The Red Carpet

This past weekend captured what this time of year at Mid-Pen does best—bringing students together in moments of reflection and celebration. From a day spent under the redwoods to a night filled with music, lights, and laughter, it was a meaningful and memorable start to the season ahead.

On Friday, our seniors headed to Camp Jones Gulch, tucked among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, to kick off their final month of high school together. Surrounded by banana slugs, fresh forest air, and limited cell service, the day offered a rare chance to unplug and be fully present with one another. Students took part in long-standing retreat traditions—writing advice for juniors, sharing thank you notes, and reflecting on their time at Mid-Pen—while also embracing the fun with Gaga Ball and archery. It was a meaningful start to the season of celebration ahead, grounded in connection, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for their class community

On Saturday night, the scene shifted from redwoods to red carpet as students arrived at the College of San Mateo for a glamorous Old Hollywood–themed prom. With sweeping views of the Bay as a backdrop, the venue sparkled with golden stars, glowing “Hollywood” signage, and Oscar statuettes adorning each table. A popcorn machine added a playful touch, while giant games of Uno, Connect Four, and Jenga kept the energy lively between trips to the dance floor. Students made their grand entrance down the red carpet before the music took over, and by the end of the night, nearly everyone was on their feet, dancing under the glow of a night worthy of the silver screen.
