Celebrating Mid-Pen's 40th
In 2019-2020 Mid-Pen celebrated 40 years of inspired learning.
In the fall of 1979, three students gathered at the Palo Alto home of Herman Ohme. Cubberly High School had closed that spring, and Herman, the former Cubberley principal, along with Phil Bliss, a Palo Alto teacher and counselor, saw the need for the kind of education that was not being offered in a post-Proposition 13 world.
Many families at the time were looking for an alternative to the public system, and as is typical of Silicon Valley start-ups, Herman and Phil began schooling the first Mid-Pen students, if not in Herman's garage, in his living room.
In early 1980, Herman and Phil leased space at the now closed Cubberley High School in Palo Alto. By the end of the 1979-1980 academic year, the school had 40 students and one graduate.
This was the humble beginning of Mid-Peninsula High School. Today we enroll over 130 students at our beautiful Willow Road campus. We are proud to celebrate more than 40 years of serving students and look forward to many more years of inspired learning.
