Teaches: ESL, English I, English II
Cory discovered the power of language at an early age, and has been producing short stories for as long as he can remember. His passion for writing earned him the nickname "Story Cory" in the fourth grade, as well as numerous awards and accolades in the years to come. He attended the University of Michigan on a gymnastics scholarship, where he received a BA in English. He then set out to travel the world, and gather material to write the next great American novel.
While abroad, Cory developed a sensitivity to non-native speakers of English. He experienced the frustrations related to navigating new cultures, and the overwhelming challenges to effective communication in foreign languages. At this time, Cory also learned how to play the acoustic guitar. He began singing, writing songs, and busking on street corners throughout Europe. After getting robbed in Spain, he returned to Michigan, started a rock band, and took a post at Washtenaw Community College, where he taught English and ESL for the next two years.
Although he loved teaching, Cory's interest in music at the time was too intense to ignore. He shed his possessions, and headed to California to pursue a career in music. He has been an active singer/songwriter, musician, bandleader, promoter, and sound engineer in the Bay Area ever since.
After more than a decade of performing, recording, and touring, Cory became inspired to return to teaching. He enrolled in a teaching of ESL program through the Berkeley Extension, where he continues to study, and recently acquired a teaching certification through Cambridge University. Cory joined the Mid-Pen staff last year, and established the school's first ESL program to accommodate a growing population of International students. He is excited to continue developing this program, as well as teaching three sections of English I/II.
In his free time, Cory enjoys drawing, painting, gardening, and playing chess.
