Kurt offers an interesting blend of life and educational experiences to Mid-Peninsula's PE program. He received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education/English at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he played varsity basketball. He drove a tour bus in Denali National Park in Alaska, and interned as a cardiac technician/exercise leader at a cardiac rehab program in Chicago. He played semi-pro baseball for a team in Menlo Park and started his own painting business in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kurt received his teaching credential at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. His first teaching experience was at Notre Dame de Victoires, a small Catholic school in San Francisco where he taught PE to students K-8. Kurt then came to Mid-Pen where he started the school's first co-ed athletic program. He also taught PE and Algebra during that time. Kurt left Mid-Peninsula after six years, moving his family to Sisters, Oregon, where he spent much of his time coaching youth sports. Kurt's love for teaching and his desire to reunite with Mid-Peninsula and its staff brought him back in 2004.
As a PE instructor, Kurt believes it is most important to provide a safe learning environment where students are not afraid to express themselves in the physical world. Students in Kurt's classes are graded on participation and improvement. As Athletic Director, Kurt's philosophy is not just about winning. He values personal accountability, sportsmanship, tolerance for individual differences and improving physical fitness. Kurt's favorite book about coaching is "The Inner Game of Tennis" by Timothy Gallwey, in which athletes are taught to trust themselves using the mind/body connection process. Above all, Kurt feels participation in sports should be fun. His favorite sport to coach is fast-pitch softball.
Kurt grew up in the San Joaquin Valley where sports and outdoor activity were a big part of his life. His favorites are body surfing, fishing, hiking, frisbee, basketball and running.
Quote: "My goal is to help students view exercise and physical activity as a lifelong endeavor and to help students discover healthy forms of exercise that they can participate in for the rest of their lives."
