Ethan Weker

Teaches: ALGEBRA 1, GEOMETRY, PRE-CALCULUS WITH TRIGONOMETRY

Ethan is thrilled to be teaching at Mid-Pen. He grew up outside of Boston, and studied mathematics and music at Bates College in Maine, combining them for his senior thesis in mathematical music theory. Following a brief stint as a jazz pianist in comedy clubs in Boston, he worked as a mathematician for an Internet security company, focusing on encryption. In 2001, he decided to make a big change, and moved to California to begin a teaching career. He taught for seven years at Stanbridge Academy in San Mateo, and discovered the joys of working with students who don't always fit in a traditional school setting. After a year at a charter school in Oakland, he taught for five years at Orion Academy, a school in Moraga focused on students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. He is excited to return to the peninsula to continue working with students who learn differently. He is teaching Algebra 1, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus, and enjoys bringing many teaching styles to the classroom. His greatest thrill is seeing the "Aha!" moment that students get when something suddenly makes sense. Ethan is a regular speaker at regional and national conferences. Follow him on Twitter at Ethan_MidPen and read his blog, Mathematician's Musings.

When not in school, Ethan spends his time with his family (a wife and two daughters), hiking with his dog (Sophie, named after the great mathematician Sophie Germain), and playing piano.
